LinkedIn leadership. The mythical state of omniscience where a leader sees all and knows all about what is going on in their business. What staff are doing, how they are feeling and outputs they are giving.

Thanks to social media, we have access to an endless stream of advice about what the best leaders do (as well as all of the things we aren’t doing or could do better). Perhaps this post is just another example.

The difference however, is that this post recognises the impossibility of perfect leadership or a perfect workplace. Things often go wrong or don’t work out the way that was intended. There are a myriad of ways that issues can manifest, and what is true of all workplaces is that you are never quite sure what the next issue to deal with may be.

A crystal ball would be a handy accessory for any leader, but in its absence, we have some proven tools to reduce this uncertainty and increase our chances of winning. Smart leaders know this and use it to their advantage.

There are no secret ingredients or startling revelations. The curious thing is that despite wide recognition of the importance of these tools to successful business, they are often overlooked. They are:

- Enterprise risk management – what can stop you from achieving your objectives?

- Internal audit – is your control environment functioning as designed?

- Quality management – what are your key processes?

If you have implemented these systems and something still goes wrong, then there isn’t much else you could have done. However, hindsight has perfect vision and without these tools, as a leader you should have known better.
